Design Story

Inspired by Frida Kahlo this piece depicts various aspects of her extraordinary life. She famously quoted, " I don't paint dreams or nightmares, I paint my own reality." This is why she never felt she was a surrealist.

There is plenty of symbolism in this artwork related to Frida and her life. The cracked column symbolizes the continual pain and suffering she underwent after her bus accident and the countless surgeries that followed. The fetus represents her inability to bear children, again due to the accident, which lead to several miscarries and periods of depression. Her tumultuous relationship with Diego Rivera (another prominent Mexican painter) was another constant topic in her works. They had messy fights, multiple extra-marital affairs and even divorced in 1939 only to remarry a year later. Her love of animals provided the security and affection she needed to fill her loneliness without children. The connected veins show the bond of everything important to her and how fragile and precious everything in life is.
